You can design it...but can you build it?

With the increased capability of CAD software it is possible to design nearly any part in a computer. But when it comes to manufacturing that part from sheet metal it is an entirely different story. It is always surprising when a customer comes to us from a large, well know company, with a print that is nearly impossible to manufacture. It seems that the bigger the company, the more common the occurrence.

Many times the engineer that worked on the part does not have any real world experience in building a part from sheet metal. They are sometimes unaware of the capabilities, and the limitations, of sheet metal manufacturing. This creates a unique problem. Do you submit a "no bid" or do you work with the customer to make the part easier to manufacture?

Working with the customer to modify the part design creates a win-win situation for everyone involved. The part can be modified so that it is easy to manufacture and can also result in large cost savings for the customer.

It is best to start working with your sheet metal manufacturing partner early in the process. Doing this will save your company valuable time and money.
